We have exciting news for Alberta schools this fall!

A limited number of Alberta schools can now book a three-day Trickster Theatre residency focused on belonging and inclusion. Through professional theatre, students build empathy, confidence, and meaningful connections.

What Does the Residency Include?

Over the course of 3 days, 10 to 12 classes — from Grade 1 through to your graduating grade — work together to create and perform a theatrical show.

We handle everything:

  • Full production setup — lighting, curtains, sound, costumes, and props. Your gym becomes a real black-box theatre.
  • Professional facilitation — our artists guide students through an improv-based creative process using movement, storytelling, dialogue, and everyday objects.
  • A unified school-wide performance — every class contributes to one shared show, built around a single theme.

This fall’s proposed theme is “You Belong Here” — rooted in inclusivity, identity, and community. Students from all backgrounds come together to explore what it means to belong, and to tell that story through theatre.

What Does Your School Need to Provide?

Just space and access.

  • Gym availability for the three days (uninterrupted)
  • 3–4 additional spaces for rehearsals

That’s it, we bring the rest.

Why This Matters

Students build storytelling skills, creative confidence, and teamwork — while the whole school connects through a shared artistic experience. It’s meaningful, memorable, and it works.

Trickster Theatre has been bringing this process to Alberta schools and communities for over 35 years. This is a rare opportunity to access it at an exceptional price.

If your school is interested, we’d love to connect and walk you through the details.

Nature, Culture, and Movement: Bringing Land-Based Learning to Life in Schools

Key Takeaways: What is Land-Based Learning? It is an educational approach that uses the localThree day residencies now available!

Key Takeaways:

    • What is Land-Based Learning? It is an educational approach that uses the local natural environment, geography, and community history as a classroom. It deeply connects students to the environment and traditional Indigenous worldviews.

    • Why is it important in Canada? It is a crucial component of Truth and Reconciliation, fostering environmental stewardship and honoring the cultural heritage, traditional knowledge, and identity of local Indigenous communities.

    • How do schools teach using it? Schools integrate this learning by taking students outdoors to study local ecosystems, history, and storytelling directly from the environment.

    • How does Trickster Theatre contribute? We create custom theatre residencies and workshops where students physically act out local land stories, history, and environmental science. When students physically embody a concept, the learning sticks with them for a lifetime.

Education in Alberta is shifting toward deeper, more meaningful connections with the world around us. With the focus on Truth and Reconciliation and the updated K-9 curriculum, educators are looking for authentic ways to implement Land-Based Learning.

How do you take a concept deeply rooted in nature and community history and bring it to life inside a school building? That’s where creative, physical learning comes in.

What is Land-Based Learning?

Land-based learning is far more than just taking a class outside for a nature walk. It is an educational philosophy that recognizes the land itself as a teacher. It integrates local natural environments, geography, and ecosystems with the history, cultures, and languages of the people who have always lived there.

Through this approach, learning becomes experiential, holistic, and deeply connected to place.

Why is it Important for Canadian Communities?

In Canada, land-based learning is deeply tied to cultural survival, identity, and environmental stewardship. For Indigenous communities, the land is a living archive of history, oral traditions, and traditional ecological knowledge.

Integrating land-based learning into schools is a vital step toward Truth and Reconciliation. It allows Indigenous students to see their heritage and worldviews reflected with pride in their education, while teaching all students the foundational concept of reciprocity—understanding our responsibility to protect and respect the natural world around us.

How Can Schools Teach Using Land-Based Learning?

Schools can embrace land-based learning by weaving the local environment directly into everyday subjects. This can look like:

    • Exploring local history by investigating nearby geographic landmarks.

    • Aligning classroom studies with natural seasonal cycles, such as the 13 Moons calendar.

    • Studying biodiversity and environmental science by observing local plant and animal life first-hand.

How Trickster Theatre Brings the Land to Life

Taking students out into nature is incredible, but translating those outdoor experiences into lasting, deep understanding can be a challenge. Trickster Theatre helps bridge that gap through the power of physical storytelling.

Here is how we partner with your school to elevate land-based learning:

1. We Go to Any School Across Alberta

Whether your school is in a major city centre, a rural farming town, or a remote Indigenous community, we bring the theatre to you. The Trickster travels to every corner of the province, arriving with professional actors, high-tech lighting and sound equipment, and a costume for every child.

2. Any Theme is Possible (100% Bespoke to Your Community)

We never use “cookie-cutter” scripts. Every single school community has a different relationship with the land they stand on. We work closely with your staff to choose a unique theme that reflects your specific geography, local history, and cultural goals. Because any theme is possible with us, we adapt entirely to the needs and circumstances of your school.

3. Embodying the Knowledge

Through our one-week residencies or short workshops, students don’t just talk about the land, they become part of it. Students act out the life cycle of a local forest, dramatize the history of a nearby river, or bring local oral histories to life on stage. When students physically embody a concept, the learning sticks with them for a lifetime.

Enable the Creativity of your Students for the next school year!

Give your students an unforgettable creative experience that honours the land, connects to the curriculum, and celebrates your local community. We guarantee 100% satisfaction for students, teachers, and parents.  Book a meeting with us to discuss your school’s unique learning goals and save the date for your 2026-27 creative project!

Trickster provides all costumes, curtains, lighting, props, sound and professional actors. Transforming your gym into a real theatre..

    • What is the Trickster added value? With 40+ years of experience in hundreds of Alberta schools, Trickster handles 100% of the production logistics, ensures every student participates, and guarantees a unique creative experience.

When you invest in a school residency, you aren’t just looking for entertainment; you’re looking for a transformative experience that justifies your school’s time and resources. You need a program that will captivate your students, inspire your teachers, and create a “once-in-a-childhood” memory that stays with them long after the gear is packed away.

At Trickster Theatre, we provide exactly that. Having worked in hundreds of schools across Alberta, we have perfected a structure that involves every single student. We don’t just put on a show; we enable the creativity of your entire school community and leave a mark that lasts for years. We take full responsibility for the production from start to finish, so you can focus on watching your students shine.

The Trickster Advantage

  • 100% Student Engagement: No one sits on the sidelines. Whether it’s a 2-day workshop or a full residency, we ensure every child is an active participant in the creative process.
  • Bespoke Theme Selection: For our residencies, any theme is possible. We don’t do “off-the-shelf” scripts; we work closely with you to choose a unique theme that resonates deeply with your students, your curriculum goals, and your specific community.
  • Professional-Grade Results: We deliver high-energy experiences and final productions that showcase the immense talent and hard work of your students using professional standards.
  • Zero Stress for Staff: We take full responsibility for the logistics. We bring the professional actors, the costumes for every child, and the full tech setup. We manage the students and the production so your teachers don’t have extra work.
  • A Lasting Legacy: The confidence, creativity, and community spirit built during our time at your school stays in your halls long after the final curtain call.

3 Ways to Transform Your School Year

We offer three distinct programs designed to bring high-energy, professional creative learning directly to your gym.

1. The One-Week Residency (Our Flagship Experience)

This is the “big event.” Over five days, we transform your school into a professional theatre company.

    • Customized for You: We don’t do “stock” plays. Each residency is built around a unique theme that reflects your school’s current interests and needs.

    • The Full Kit: We arrive with a massive costume library, professional lighting, and sound equipment.

    • The Result: A community-building week that culminates in a professional performance where every student is a star.

Funding is available through the AFA Artist and Education Grant. Yearly deadline May 1.

We help schools develop their theme so they can submit the strongest application!

If you missed the AFA funding deadline, contact us! We can still book your residency!

2. Science Workshops (Kinesthetic Learning)

Make the curriculum unforgettable. Our 2-day workshops use movement and physical theatre to help students “act out” complex science concepts.

    • How it works: Instead of just reading about earth systems or space, students physically embody them.

    • Why it works: When kids move, they learn. This is the perfect solution for engaging kinesthetic learners and making abstract ideas stick.

3. Storytelling Workshops (From Textbook to Action!)

Help your students find their voice. These workshops focus on the mechanics of storytelling through the lens of physical theatre.

    • The Process: We help students map out characters and narrative arcs using their bodies first.

    • The Result: This process smashes “writer’s block” and builds immense confidence in literacy and public speaking.
