A 3-Day workshop where students perform in a show that explores Belonging and Inclusion.
This 3-day workshop explores a wide range of themes related to belonging and inclusion, including:
- The importance of personal stories and lived experiences
- How different communities understand and create belonging
- The actions and attitudes that foster inclusion
- Ways we help others feel welcome and valued
- The development of empathy and understanding
- The importance of listening and connection
How does the workshop work?
This program uses a variety of props, costumes, and theatrical styles to tell stories, finalizing with a set show, as the core elements of each story are already developed. Students have opportunities to contribute ideas and add details that personalize the final show and reflect their own experiences
Dates & Schedule: This program is a continuous 3-day workshop.
Space Requirements: Gym for 3-days uninterrupted and 2-3 spaces for rehearsals.
All Grades Involved: This residency can embrace 8 to 10 classes between grade 1 through 12 (if applicable), bringing the school together in a united artistic venture.
Story Topics
Each story examines belonging and inclusion from a different perspective and is adapted to be age-appropriate for the participating students.
Nature and Animal Communities
Some stories take place in the animal kingdom, exploring how creatures work together and coexist. Students may examine how bees collaborate within a hive or how different species share habitats and support one another.
Social Media and Online Communities
Other stories explore students’ experiences with social media, the desire to fit in or gain recognition, and the challenges of navigating online relationships and digital communities.
Welcoming Newcomers
Several stories focus on building friendships, welcoming newcomers, and helping people feel included within schools and communities.
Kindness and Community Building
Stories may also explore how acts of kindness, generosity, and small gestures can strengthen relationships and create a sense of community.
Listening to Each Other’s Stories
Other pieces emphasize the value of sharing personal experiences and recognizing the diversity, uniqueness, and perspectives of others.
Trickster Theatre School Conference
As part of Trickster Theatre’s Belonging & Inclusion 3-Day Workshop, participating schools are invited to take part in a culminating reflection virtual conference following their residency and final performance.
During this conference, students will watch selected video excerpts from performances created by participating schools across Alberta. These performances showcase diverse perspectives, providing students with the opportunity to learn from one another, celebrate different experiences, and reflect on the many ways belonging and inclusion are expressed across our country.
