Trickster Theatre (Calgary, AB) will be holding ongoing general auditions in June for Summer Camp/Trickster Residency Artist positions to start June 27, 2022.
We are looking to hire 4 artists at the end of June for a 20 week full time contract; this will include 4 weeks of training in our process, mixed with 4 weeks teaching summer camps or in schools, and assisting with inventory and yearly gear repair and maintenance, and 12 weeks working in our Trickster artist-in-residency program for the 2022-23 school season. People hired for the summer contracts must be between the ages of 18-30 as these contracts are funded by the Canada Summer Jobs program.
At the end of the summer (first 8 weeks), we will assess your progress and assign you to work as appropriate in our school season (Late September – Mid June) for a minimum of 12 weeks (20 weeks total work). These weeks will be assigned based on artist schedules and availability; you must be available to tour Alberta for a minimum of 12 weeks during the season (in addition to the initial 8 summer weeks in Calgary) to qualify for the contracts. More weeks may be offered based on accommodation of artist availability and programming demands.
Successful applicants MUST be able to live in Calgary for the duration of July and August.
Fees for the summer camp positions are $18 per hour. Residency fees (fall) start at $800 per week plus per diems and accommodations and increase with experience in the company.
The Trickster Process was created by our founder and Artistic Director, David Chantler, and is unique within Canada. As a physical theatre and Alberta children’s performing arts company, our artists use a combination of movement, improvisation, and dialogue along with using everyday items such as bamboo poles, pool noodles, PVC pipes, tablecloths, etc. to create original plays each week within schools. Artists are involved in every aspect of the production and will learn how to integrate sound, lights, and tech cues into all of their pieces and become familiar with how to set up and run a touring theatre rig.
In our main Trickster Artist-in-Residency program, we embed a team of artists within a school to co-create an original show with up to 600 student actors in one week. Trickster provides all of the curtains, lights, props, sound, and costumes as the school gymnasium is transformed into a live theatre with all of the students performing in the final show. We are looking for theatre artists that are interested in working with students in schools across Alberta.
