Open Auditions – Calgary

Location: Calgary, Alberta, Canada
Type: Theatre for Young Audiences

Trickster Theatre (Calgary, AB) will be holding general auditions for local actors in Calgary, Alberta on Wednesday, May 4th, 2022 at the Crescent Heights Community Centre. Present at the auditions will be Artistic Director, David Chantler and Operations Manager, Nimrodel Whiting.

The Trickster Process was created by our founder and Artistic Director, David Chantler, and is unique within Canada. As a physical theatre and children’s performing arts company, our artists use a combination of movement, improvisation, and dialogue along with using everyday items such as bamboo poles, pool noodles, PVC pipes, tablecloths, etc. to create original plays each week within schools. Artists are involved in every aspect of the production and will learn how to integrate sound, lights, and tech cues into all of their pieces and become familiar with how to set up and run a touring theatre rig.

In our main Artist-in-Residency program, we embed a team of artists within a school to co-create an original show with up to 600 student actors in one week. Trickster Theatre provides all of the curtains, lights, props, sound, & costumes as the school gymnasium is transformed into a live theatre with all of the students performing in the final show. We are looking for theatre and performing arts artists that are interested in working with students in schools across Alberta.

Artists are invited to apply for an audition by sending an electronic copy of your resume and headshot to production@trickstertheatre.com. Please include Trickster General Auditions in the subject line; we will email you our questionnaire and a link to book your audition time.

We are looking to hire 4 artists at the end of June for an 8 week full time contract, and another 4 artists in September for an 8 week full time contract; this will include training in our process, teaching summer camps or in schools, and assisting with inventory and yearly gear repair and maintenance. People hired for the June contracts must be between the ages of 15-30 as these contracts are funded by the Canada Summer Jobs program.

At the end of the first 8 weeks, we will assess your progress and assign you to work as appropriate in our school season (Late September – Mid June) for a minimum of 12 weeks. These weeks will be assigned based on artist schedules and availability; you must be available for a minimum of 12 weeks during the season (in addition to the initial 8 weeks) to qualify for the contracts. More weeks may be offered based on accommodation of artist availability and programming demands.

Successful applicants MUST be able to live in Calgary for the duration of the first 8 weeks of work (for both June and September start dates)

Audition Requirement: This will be a group audition that will be fairly physical and improvised in nature. We will be taking you through some of the physical theatre processes that we use during our residencies (you can check out some of what we do on our website – www.trickster theatre.com). Please wear clothing that you can move in and bring a water bottle and a notebook.

If you have any additional questions, please contact Nimrodel at production@trickstertheatre.com
